In tuhituhi (writing) we have been learning how to write Procedures. We read a procedure about making sock puppets. On Rāmere we decided to make some kāretao tōkena - sock puppets! We were being Critical Thinkers. We had to plan our puppets before we made them. We had to think carefully about what we wanted to do. There were 2 rōpu who were the best Critical Thinkers - well done to the Chicky's and The Lions! Ngā mihi to Katene, Merryn, Carlos (The Chicky's) and Lucan, Aliyah, Jackson and Velocette (The Lions). Here are some pictures of our kāretao tōkena. :-D

Ko te Wero o te Wiki - wero tuarua
For our Wero o te Wiki we made a type of waka rererangi - a paper dart. We had a wero to see whose dart could fly the best. We used straws, bluetac, paper, and paperclips. We only had 15 minutes to construct it. This week we looked at showing Resilience. We showed resilience because it was a bit hard and we didn't give up. We kept on trying. The Wolverine rōpu won! Their paper dart flew 6 metres. Well done Nehsaun, James and Stevie. :-D

Ko te Wero o te Wiki!
This term we will be having a Wero o te Wiki (challenge of the week) every Rāpare. This week we had a wine gum wero and we practiced being good Participators. Being a good Participator is important at Hornby Primary School.
We had to see who could make the highest tower using wine gums and toothpicks. We let others share their ideas, we took turns, we were nice to our team mates. We had some fun. The Chicky rōpu won - well done Carlos, and Katene!! :-D

Mahia te Sherbet - Making Sherbet
On Rāpare (Thursday) we made sherbet in Pūtaiao. We were learning about mixing acids and baking soda. The citric acid and tartaric acid were sour. Tino kawa! Our sherbet was fizzy, prickly, poppy and orangey. It tasted ka mau te wehi (amazing).

Pūtaiao - Mahia te Oobleck!
Today (Rāpare) we made Oobleck! We used cornflour, food colouring and some wai. We played with it and we made a BIG mess! Oobleck is a liquid and a solid. Our Oobleck felt squishy, slimy, hard, soft, smooth and gooey all at the same time! It was strange and it was fun. Whaea Rovena will remember the paint-shirts next time! Mō taku hē!

Ahikirīmi!!
On Rāmere (Friday) we made ahikirīmi (ice cream). We put some ice and tote (salt) in a big bag and mixed them. Then we got a small bag and put some miraka, vanilla essence, huka (sugar) and some food colouring inside. Next we put the small bag into the big bag. We shook the bags for 5-10 minutes. The miraka turned into aihikirīmi! The bag was freezing! Then we got to eat our aihikirīmi. We had a few marshmellows with it. It tasted delicious - tino reka!!

Pūtaiao me te Miraka hoki!
On Rāmere we looked at 4 types of miraka for Pūtaiao. They were blue top miraka, coconut miraka, non-homogenised miraka, and condensed miraka. We looked at the colour, and the taste, and how they splashed. We learnt that not all milk comes from a cow. It was fun. Some people felt a bit mauiui after eating lots of condensed miraka. Reka!
